Downtown Lincoln Growth Continues: Convention Center Site Announced Near The Federal Trust Building

LINCOLN, NE — Exciting progress is underway for Downtown Lincoln as Assemble Lincoln, Lancaster County’s standing committee for the city’s new convention center, has officially selected the Garfield Public/Private site near S. 13th and M Streets as the location for Lincoln’s future convention center. The announcement marks a major milestone in the city’s downtown revitalization efforts — just a few blocks away from Stonebrook Companies’ property, the historic Federal Trust Building.
As proud owners of one of downtown Lincoln’s landmark properties, Stonebrook Companies celebrates this next chapter of growth for the city’s core. The new convention center will serve as a vital connector between the Haymarket District, the Capitol, and the expanding southern corridor — driving increased activity, tourism, and economic opportunity in the area. “It’s an exciting time to see Lincoln continue to invest in its future,” said the Stonebrook leadership team. “With the Federal Trust Building located just steps from the selected site, we’re thrilled to see this kind of development taking shape in our neighborhood.”
As planning moves forward, the project will begin preliminary negotiations, land acquisition, and design coordination in partnership with state and local leaders, including Governor Jim Pillen’s office, Congressman Mike Flood, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, and community development partners such as Legends, Populous, and Clark & Enersen. Stonebrook Companies congratulates Assemble Lincoln and all those involved in bringing this transformative project to life — one that will strengthen the vibrancy and connectivity of downtown Lincoln for decades to come.

Federal Trust Building Begins a New Era in Downtown Lincoln, Nebraska

LINCOLN, NE - The Federal Trust Building, a 12-story Gothic Revival landmark at 13th and N Streets in downtown Lincoln, is stepping into a new chapter as it welcomes the Nebraska Hospital Association (NHA) as its newest tenant.
The property, purchased by Old Fed, LLC—a team led by Steve Kunkel and Jason Reinke of Stonebrook Companies—is being carefully revitalized to honor its historic character while serving as a hub for professional and civic collaboration in the city’s core.
“Our interest in the Federal Trust Building started with its unmatched location, just steps from the Capitol and City Hall,” said Steve Kunkel, Co-CEO of Stonebrook Companies. “But it’s more than location—it’s about preserving history and giving this building back its place as a community cornerstone.”
Jason Reinke, Co-CEO of Stonebrook Companies, added: “This project goes beyond renovation. It’s about reinvestment—in Lincoln, in leadership, and in organizations that are shaping the future.”
The NHA, with its long legacy of supporting Nebraska’s hospitals and health systems, is an ideal addition to this vision. Its new headquarters will span four floors, including remodeled first and second floors with a dedicated event space, as well as administrative offices and subsidiary operations on the eighth and ninth floors.
“We’re excited to move our headquarters here in the heart of Lincoln,” said Jeremy Nordquist, NHA President. “Being closer to decision-makers allows us to better serve hospitals and health systems across the state. This move represents both a long-term commitment to downtown and an investment in the communities we support.”
The building retains its character and unique features, including a 1,130-square-foot underground vault with a 17-ton door, now serving as a secure data center operated by Binary.Net. In addition, longtime tenants such as Crosby Guenzel LLP and the ACLU of Nebraska remain in place, ensuring continuity as the building transitions into this new era.
A limited number of premium office suites are still available for organizations seeking a downtown address with history, impact, and purpose. For leasing details or to schedule a tour, please contact Jayme Shelton at (402) 525-6648 or jayme@reddoorne.com.
